37 shots on goal allowed by the Comets in their game Friday against the Peterson Swords led to a 4-0 loss in the first game of the Elder Ice Hockey Tournament.
However, head coach Seth Knudsen said that the large difference in speed and skill between the Comets and Peterson, an all-senior travel team, was the biggest factor.
“There’s a huge difference in skill, between us playing freshmen and them playing an all-senior team,” Knudsen said. “It would be no different than if we went and played a bunch of eighth grade kids in a tournament, we’d probably win the whole thing."
Knudsen also said that lack of possession by the Comets led to only six shots on goal offensively.
“They had the puck on their stick 75% of the game,” Knudsen said. “When you only have the puck on your stick 25% of the game, it’s hard to score goals.”
Knudsen also said he was proud of the effort shown by the Comets, especially by the younger and less experienced players.
“We’re going to take away that we had some younger guys like Connor Rupp and Duncan Mackenzie play incredible games,” Knudsen said. “They stepped up, I’m just excited to see some of our younger guys play better.”
Knudsen also said that the effort in this game is the winning attitude the Comets need.
“If we play like that every game, I think we’ll win a lot of games,” Knudsen said. “We’re going to keep working, and we’re going to keep getting better… I’m as happy about how this game played out as any we’ve had this year.”

Attention fanbase,
I will be taking a break from Who Will Win?! and Sports News for a few days, because school is out for Winter Break, and I'm getting kind of sick of working. I will, however, have more Mason Comets Hockey articles out.

Thunderhawks Roll Past Comets, 6-2
The Comet ice hockey team was able to stay with the Lakota
East Thunderhawks throughout the game, but collapsed in the third period for a
6-2 loss.
Head coach Seth Knudsen said that he was proud of the team
effort, that is, until the last ten minutes.
“I felt, in the first 35 minutes, we outplayed them,”
Knudsen said. “We had them on the ropes, we just couldn’t get the puck past the
goalie, then we kind of fell apart [in the third].”
Knudsen also said that they took too many bad penalties to
remain competitive in the game.
“Penalties are going to happen, but you always want them to
be penalties that take away scoring chances.” Knudsen said. “We weren’t very
smart, and we’ve got to correct that… or we’re not going to be successful.”
Knudsen also said that they need to reinforce fundamentals
to clean up occasional sloppy play.
“We’ve just got to reinforce what’s important and why we do
it.” Knudsen said. “Part of it is that we rely on our
defense to create offensive chances, and when you do that, sometimes you have
to roll the dice.”

[Hockey] Talawanda Beats Mason, 3-2
The Comet ice hockey
team kept the offense moving throughout the game, but wasn’t enough to defeat
the Talawanda Braves Sunday morning, losing 3-2.
Head coach Seth
Knudsen said that he was thrilled with the performance, despite the loss.
“When we played
Talawanda on Friday, it was a completely different game,” Knudsen said. “In
terms of how we played, our positioning was better, we did everything better. I
know that it’s a 3-2 loss, [but] it could’ve been a 3-2 win.”
Knudsen also said
that the team’s general inexperience with close games was a factor in the close
defeat.
“Some of our kids
have not been in a close game… so you could see some of the players that have
experience in these types of settings, and they stepped up, but also we had
guys like [Nathan] Davis and Brandon [Barnes], they didn’t have a lot of
experience, but they played well.”
Knudsen also said
that a competitive game against Lakota East next Friday should be expected.
“[Lakota East is] going
to be fast, they're going to be skilled, they're going to be well coached, so
it's going to be a challenge. But it's fun, it always is fun when we play
them.”
