Panthers Defeat Comets, 6-4

The Elder Panthers defeated the Comets hockey team 6-4, on the strength of four goals in the third period.

Assistant head coach Jerry O’Grady said that fatigue from Friday’s game was part of why the Comets gave up five power plays, resulting in two goals for the Panthers.

“I think we just had a lot of guys who were a little tired from a rough game last night,” O’Grady said. “We took a couple penalties that probably weren’t in our best favor.”

O’Grady also said that inexperience was a factor in knowing when to hit and when not to hit, also leading to the aforementioned power plays.

“They think they’ve got an opportunity to hit a guy,” O’Grady said, “The next thing you know, the guy’s turned, they’ve made a bad decision, and they’re in in the box.”

On the positive side, the penalty kill only allowed a total of eight shots on the Panthers’ five power play opportunities.

“We’ve been working a lot on the penalty kill… the one thing we’ll be known for is good, strong, penalty killing. The guys have bought into it, and they continue to do what they’re supposed to do.”
The next game for the Comets is Sat. Feb. 8, against the Northern Kentucky Norse.
